Liebe Prototypler*innen, *(English version below)* endlich dürfen wir es offiziell verkünden: Der Prototype Fund geht weiter! In den nächsten vier Jahren werden wir in einer Neuauflage unseres Förderprogramms kluge und innovative Open Source-Softwareprojekte aus der Gesellschaft und für die Gesellschaft mit Beratung, Coachings, Vernetzung und finanzieller Förderung aus dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung unterstützen. Weil wir in acht Jahren Softwareförderung so einiges lernen und im direkten Austausch mit unseren Projekte erfahren konnten, was Hindernisse auf dem Weg zum erfolgreichen FOSS-Projekt sein können, gibt es dabei auch einige Neuerungen! [image: Das Logo des Prototype Fund: Zwei überlappende P, darunter steht: Ideen erproben - Offenheit schaffen.] Neue Fördersummen Im Prototype Fund wurden Softwareentwickler*innen und kleine Teams bisher über 6 Monate mit bis zu 47.500 € gefördert. Wer mit mehreren Personen an einem Prototyp geschraubt hat, musste dieses Geld aufteilen. Ab jetzt wird die Förderung für Teams bis zu 95.000 € umfassen und damit mehr und flexiblere Teammodelle sowie die Umsetzung deutlich größerer Projektumfänge ermöglichen. Die Teamgröße wird dabei auf vier Personen beschränkt. Außerdem wird es ab jetzt möglich sein, dass sich Mitglieder in Teams auch mit einem Wohnsitz im EU-Ausland auf eine Förderung bewerben – wichtig ist nur, dass bei der Förderung der Sitz der GbR in Deutschland ist. Und wir nehmen ab jetzt englischsprachige (und nach wie vor natürlich auch deutschsprachige) Bewerbungsunterlagen entgegen. Die Second Stage Nach wie vor besteht die reguläre Förderung für 25 bis 30 Softwareprojekte aus sechs Monaten mit bis zu 95.000 € Fördersumme für Teams, Coachings, Vernetzung und Beratung. Nach deren Abschluss wird die Förderung in der Second Stage für zehn bis 15 Projekte um vier Monate verlängert. In dieser Zeit ist die Fördersumme für Einzelpersonen auf 31.667 € und für Teams auf 63.333 € gedeckelt. Warum das Ganze? Wenige Technologien sind nach der initialen Finanzierung so weit, dass sie in den Produktivbetrieb gehen und sich selbst finanzieren können. Das haben wir auch im Prototype Fund bei vielen Projekten sehen können. Mit Ende der Förderzeit heißt es für viele zurück in die Erwerbsarbeit, ins Studium,... Hier bleibt allerdings selten Zeit, das (Prototype Fund-)Projekt nebenbei weiterzuentwickeln. Das Ergebnis ist, dass die Prototypen oft zu wenig Bekanntheit erlangen, nicht ausreichend genutzt werden und sich auch keine Community darum bildet, die beispielsweise bei der Instandhaltung unterstützt. In der Second Stage wird deshalb mit User Tests, Community-, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit etc. der Schwerpunkt darauf gelegt, die Projekte langfristig nutzbar und bekannt zu machen. Technische Arbeiten können in kleinem Umfang weitergehen, stehen aber im Hintergrund. Angepasste Förderschwerpunkte Zukünftig wollen wir uns auf die Bereiche Datensicherheit und Software-Infrastruktur konzentrieren. Projekte aus diesen Bereichen sind in der Vergangenheit deutlich *nachhaltiger* <https://prototypefund.de/nachhaltigkeit-ist-mehr-als-nur-gartnerei/> gewesen. Meist sind sie als Komponenten stärker in bestehende Software-Ökosysteme integriert, skalieren eher und lassen sich vielfältiger einsetzen, so zum Beispiel Kommunikationstools wie Messenger oder neue Bausteine für bestehende Software-Ökosysteme wie Linux-Betriebssysteme oder LibreOffice. Beibehalten werden wir die grundsätzliche Offenheit für Technologien und Experimente. Denn Innovationsförderung ist immer auch mit dem Risiko verbunden, dass sich eine Idee auch mal als Fehler oder nicht umsetzbar herausstellt. Der Prototype Fund ist und bleibt der Raum dafür, sich trotzdem zu trauen. Die erste Bewerbungsphase Und das Beste? Es geht sofort los. Die Bewerbungsphase für unseren Jahrgang 01 beginnt am 11.11.2024. Ihr habt bis zum 02.01.2025 Zeit, eure Ideen auf unserer Bewerbungsplattform einzureichen. Die erste Förderperiode beginnt dann am 01.06.2025 und geht bis zum 30.11.2025, für die Second Stage-Projekte bis zum 31.03.2026. Spread the word! The Second Stage As before, the regular funding for 25 to 30 software projects consists of six months of funding with up to €95,000 for teams, coaching, networking and consulting. After that, the funding is extended by four months for ten to 15 projects in the Second Stage. During this time, the funding amount is capped at €31,667 for individuals and €63,333 for teams. Why all this? Few technologies are ready to go live and finance themselves after initial funding. We have seen this in many projects in the Prototype Fund. When the funding period ends, many people have to go back to work or study, and there is rarely time to continue developing the (Prototype Fund) project on the side. As a result, the prototypes often lack exposure, are not used enough, and no community is formed around them to support their maintenance, for example. In the Second Stage, the focus is therefore on user testing, community and public relations work, etc., in order to make the projects usable and known in the long term. Technical work can continue on a small scale, but is in the background. Adjusted funding scope In the future, we want to focus on the areas of data security and software infrastructure. Projects in these areas have been significantly *more sustainable* <https://prototypefund.de/nachhaltigkeit-ist-mehr-als-nur-gartnerei/> in the past. They are usually more strongly integrated into existing software ecosystems as components, are more likely to scale, and can be used in a variety of ways, for example, communication tools such as messengers or new building blocks for existing software ecosystems such as Linux operating systems or LibreOffice. We will maintain our fundamental openness to technologies and experiments. After all, promoting innovation always involves the risk that an idea may turn out to be a mistake or impossible to implement. The Prototype Fund is and remains a space where people can still dare to try. The first application phase And the best part? We're starting right away. The application phase for our first round begins on November 11th, 2024. You have until January 2nd, 2025 to submit your ideas on our application platform. The first funding period will then begin on 01.06.2025 and will last until November 30th, 2025, for the Second Stage projects until March 31st, 2026. Spread the word!
