Beste Grüße Sophia Dear Prototype Fund Alumni from rounds 13 and 14, As promised I am informing you about the publication of the evaluation report for the rounds of the Prototype Fund that you participated in. You can find the report here: https://prototypefund.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Evaluationsbericht-Runde.... For those of you who are interested but don't want to read the full report or who find reading reports in German a challenge, I have summarized the key points below. If you have comments, they are much appreciated. Again, thank you very much for your help! Best, Sophia Here are the key findings from rounds 13 and 14: * Most of you have got to know the Prototype Fund through friends or other contacts. * The number of applications for round 13 was 150, which is lower than in previous rounds. In round 14, it went up again and reached 262, which is close to the average of 264. * The Prototype Fund is receiving more and more applications for projects using or critically scrutinising methods of generative AI. Especially in round 14, shortly after ChatGPT was released, the number of such applications has gone up noticeably. * The majority of you already had experience in developing FOSS projects before the funding period started. Especially in round 14, the level of experience was high and about a third of the projects had been started before the beginning of the funding period. * For most of you, community building is an integral part of open source software development. The most frequently mentioned reason for why a community is valuable was technical support from others with coding or other parts of software development. * During the funding period, community building didn't usually play a role in the technical implementation of your projects and many of you only published their code at a later development stage. * At the time of the evaluation, about a third of the projects had published information on how to participate in contributing guidelines or a readme file. Only a few of the projects had recorded code contributions by more than five developers in their repositories. * Many of the projects continue to exist. A few months after the funding period ended, regular code contributions could be found in about a third of the project repositories. Some grantees also continued working on their projects in other ways, e.g. by applying for funding, which doesn't necessarily show in the project repositories. -- Sophia Schulze Schleithoff Prototype Fund prototypefund.de | @prototypefund Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e.V.
